District Conference 2008/9
President
Anne and two Rotarians with partners will be attending the District Conference
in Llandudno from October 31st – 2nd
November. It is not too late to join us
and the 400 other District Rotarians.
Why not also consider signing up later in the year for the RIBI
Conference in Edinburgh and the RI Convention in
Birmingham in
2009.
Tree of Light
Plans
for the Club’s Tree of Light are well advanced.
The tree will be placed at Charlies’ Country Store
Coed y Dinas, Welshpool. The Club is indebted to Charlies’ for their marvellous support; they are helping to produce the posters
and the large board which will appear at the base of the tree. They are also donating the lights for the
tree.
The
tree is being supplied courtesy of the Forestry Commission, and again the Club
would like to express its gratitude for this generous gift.
The
local newspaper, the County
Times, is absolutely key to this project.
They have given us their full support, and will print the relevant
coupon, and the lists of names, each week during November and December.
Coupons
will also be available from local shops and businesses.
We
are undertaking this project to support Hope House, and are working closely
with that organization. They have
provided us with many ideas.
The
Tree of Light will commence somewhere around mid November and will run until
Christmas.
Train Trip for Children
On
June the 20th 56 children from Maes Y Dre School had a ride on the Welshpool
and Llanfair Light Railway, courtesy of Welshpool Rotary. The train was specially chartered and the
children were accompanied by three Rotarians and staff from the school. On the way they looked for items of interest
which had been listed for them prior to the journey. The group was split into four, and on arrival
at Llanfair they alternated between the cafeteria, the signal box and the
engine shed. There was also a quiz, the
questions being about the Railway.
The
day was thoroughly enjoyed by all concerned.
All the arrangements had been made by Rotarian Robert Robinson.
Charity Lunch and Auction
A
major fund raising event is being held in the grounds of a house belonging to a
Welshpool Rotarian on Sunday 6th July 2008. We will have the use of a large marquee,
where a lunch will be provided for 120 people at a cost of £12.50 per
head. There will be live classical music
performed by two local artists. The
activities will include a raffle and auction.
Money raised will be split between Medecins Sans Frontieres and Rotary
charities.
Charter Dinner
Welshpool Rotary Club will be 60 years old this year and in
celebration a Charter Dinner evening will be held on 19th May 2007
at the Royal Oak. Our guests will include Rotarians from our
sister Club in Norway
and the District Governor.
After the Charter Dinner, Welshpool and Norwegian Rotarians will
depart on a trip to Ireland
as part of their programme.
Cook Book
Help our fund raising efforts by selling the Welshpool Rotary Cook
Book prices at £8.50. Proceeds to local and international charities. Makes an ideal Christmas
present. Get your copies from Pat
Lewis or Mike Edwards.
