Since the Indian Ocean Tsunami hit on Boxing Day, Welshpool Rotary has raised over £2,000 from street collections and donations. The funds have been converted into Rotary Aid in the form of Shelter Boxes and Aqua Boxes.
In the short period since the Tsunami struck we have purchased four Shelter Boxes at a cost of £490 each. These contain a ten person durable tent, sleeping bags for ten people plus valuable shelter equipment such as a cooker, spade, rope, etc. The four boxes have already been dispatched to the Tsunami area.
Equally, eight Aqua Boxes have been dispatched from the depot in Derbyshire to Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Currently, seven empty Aqua Boxes are on order. These Aqua Boxes serve a dual role in any disaster in that they provide clean drinking water for up to 1,100 litres and water storage, along with clothing, household and hygiene items. Our thanks go to many local organizations who have helped to fill the Aqua Boxes at short notice.
For more information on Shelter and Aqua Boxes see our International section.
